Biographical History

The original building of St. Ann(e)'s was the first church built in Detroit. The church of French Catholics, its foundation were laid in 1702 on the feast day of St. Ann. The first church was destroyed, rebuilt in 1723, and burned in the Detroit fire of 1805. Another new church was built between 1817 and 1819. Richard became pastor in 1798 and served until his death during the cholera epidemic in 1832, which is documented in the huge list of funerals for 1832 in this volume. Saint Anne's Church was the first Catholic church in Detroit (Mich.), and the second Catholic mission to the Indians established in Michigan. The first French Catholic church dedicated to Saint Anne was erected in 1701 by Fr. Constantin de L'halle in Detroit. Fr. Richard established a mission to Saint Anne in 1728.
