Biographical History

James and Mary Latham, both born in Virginia, moved to Kentucky and in 1819 came to Illinois with their nine children, settling at Elkhart Grove. James and his son Richard built a mill at Elkhart. When Sangamon County was organized, James was appointed judge of the probate court and justice of the peace. In 1821 he was appointed sub-agent for Indian Affairs at Peoria, Ill. He and Mary moved to Peoria, but when James died in 1826, Mary returned to Elkhart. Their son Robert was the sheriff of Logan County in 1850, elected to the legislature in 1860, served in the Civil War achieving rank of Colonel and then returned to Lincoln, Ill. as a real estate salesman. Grandson Henry C. Latham, son of Richard, dealt in real estate in Springfield, Ill.
