Biographical History
The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) was formed in 1946 in order to provide national leadership to state and district conservation associations, and now unites the approximately three thousand districts into a collective unit to facilitate the development of national conservation policies, influence lawmakers, and build partnerships with other agencies and organizations. The idea of soil conservation districts came from the desire to involve more farmers at the local level in soil and water conservation in order to prevent the erosion and conditions of the Dust Bowl era during the 1930s.
