Topographical engineer.
John James Abert (1788-1863) was a topographical engineer for the United States Army. He supervised many early national engineering projects, including the planning for a wagon road from Genoa, Utah to Carson Valley, Nevada.
John James Abert served as commander of the Topographical Bureau and Corps of Topographical Engineers, 1829-1861.
William G. Williams was born in 1801. He served as an officer in the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, and he was commander of the U.S. Lake Survey, 1841-1845. He was killed during the Mexican War in the Battle of Monterey, 1846.
