Biographical History

Ellsworth Woodward was born July 14, 1861, in Seeconk, Mass., and was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design. He was appointed professor of art at Tulane University in 1885. When the Newcomb College was organized, he became director of the Art School, and held this position until his retirement in 1931. He was one of the founders of the New Orleans Art Association, and was active in the Southern States Art League and the Louisiana Art Teachers' Association. An artist himself, his etchings, drawings and paintings were exhibited locally and nationally. Professor Woodward advocated for occupations in the fine handicrafts and in the arts.
