Biographical History

Mort's Dock was constructed in 1854-1855 by T.S. Mort, to provide Sydney with expanded port facilities. In 1866 Mort entered into partnership with Thomas McArthur, and the firm subsequently made large additions to the dock and widened the scope of its activities from ship repairing to shipbuilding and engineering. After McArthur's death in 1869 the concern became the Waterview Dry Dock and Engineering Company; and the works were later taken over by the Mort's Dock and Engineering Company, which was registered in N.S.W. on 1 February 1875 and re-registered in 1899 with enlarged capital. This concern carried on the activities undertaken by the previous firm until January 1959, when a meeting of shareholders decided to liquidate the company.
