Biographical History
A native of West Newton, Ind., Paul L. (Leland) Haworth was a historian, editor, and author. He wrote popular adventure fiction as well as monographs and articles concerning American history, African Amerian suffrage, and contemporary Canadian society and politics. He taught at Columbia University (N.Y.), Bryn Mawr (Pa.), and Indiana University (Bloomington). Haworth was head of the History Department at Butler University (Indianapolis) through the 1920s and 30s and served as a Republican in the Indiana House of Representives (1921). He also worked as an editor for Bobbs-Merrill (Indianapolis). Haworth married Martha Ackerman in 1903 and the union bore three children: Leland John, Anna Ruth, and Martha Rosalie. He explored the headwaters of the Peace and Kwadacha Rivers in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, in 1916. Rosa Haworth was a teacher in Marion County. Anna Ruth Haworth married Leon H. Wallace, future Dean of Law at Indiana University, Bloomington. Paul L. Haworth's parents, John D. and Fanny (nee Horner) were fruit farmers in West Newton.
