Biographical History
Schaffner earned his Harvard AB 1917. He served Harvard as a member of the Committee to Visit the Harvard College Library and as a donor of books.
Yousuf Karsh, an Armenian Turk who emigrated to Canada in 1918, is known for his formal portrait photographs of the famous and powerful.
"Erskine Caldwell wrote twelve books of nonfiction, twenty-five novels, and nearly 150 short stories. Profoundly influenced by his father, a minister and social reformer, he was intent on depicting life among the lowly in Georgia and the rest of the South. His concern for the less fortunate-poor whites and blacks-shines in his great novels and short stories of the 1930s. This concern also permeates the strongest writing of his later years, his nonfiction works of the 1960s." - "Erskine Caldwell." Yousuf Karsh was a "Turkish-born Canadian photographer known for his portraits of important personages. As an Armenian in Turkey, the young Karsh endured persecution and privation. In 1924, at age 16, he immigrated to Canada, joining his uncle, who was a photographer, in Sherbrooke, Quebec. From 1928 to 1931 he served as an apprentice to a Boston painter and portrait photographer and briefly attended art school. Returning to Canada in 1932, he was employed by an Ottawa photographer, whose studio Karsh leased after his employer retired. He was appointed official portrait photographer of the Canadian government in 1935 and became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1947." -- "Karsh, Yousuf." Encyclopedia Britannica Online.
