Biographical History

The Marquis de Montalet left Saint Domingo in 1797 after a slave uprising. He bought "The Hermitage" in 1798, but relocated after the death of his wife to Sapelo Island, where he owned the plantation, "le Chatelet." Kelvin Grove plantation, located on St. Simons Island, was the location of the Battle of Bloody March. The plantation was owned by the Caters family, originally from South Carolina. Thomas Cater had one son, Benjamin Franklin Cater, who married Anne Armstrong, a niece of the Wyllys family of The Village plantation on St. Simons. Benjamin and Ann had a daughter, Ann, who married James P. Postell. No information is available on Magnolia Plantation.

From the description of Alfred W. Jones collection on Southern plantations, 1803-1861. (Georgia Historical Society). WorldCat record id: 85845117
