Biographical History

Thomas Pugh was born on July 4, 1796, in Bertie County, N.C. Along with his half-brothers Whitmell Hill and Augustin, he moved to Louisiana in 1818 and settled on Bayou Lafourche, near Napoleonville, La., in 1820. He married Eliza Catherine Foley in 1825 and the couple had sixteen children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. Pugh worked as a sugar cane planter and built Madewood Plantation. He died on October 31, 1852.
