Born July 19, 1891, at Franklin, Indiana; A.B., Indiana University, 1913; LLB., Harvard, 1916; admitted to the Indiana bar, 1914; served as an officer in the Field artillery reserve during World War I; commanding officer, 326 Field artillery, 1924-1937; member, 5th corps area advisory board, 1927-1934; appointed to the faculty of the Indiana University School of law, 1917; dean, 1925-1933; national commander, American Legion, 1928-1929; governor of Indiana, 1933-1937; U.S. high commissioner to the Philippines, 1937-1939 and 1945-1946; ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Philippines, 1946-1947; Federal security administrator, 1939-1942; chairman, War manpower commission, 1942-1945; partner, McNutt & Nash, New York, and McNutt, Dudley & Easterwood, Washington.
