Biographical History
Charles Prentice Adams was born 12 October 1845 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the third child of Dr. Lucius S. and Ella (Prentice) Adams. Charles was married, 5 October 1865, to Margaret Gavit, daughter of a prominent bank note engraver, John E. Gavit of Albany and New York City. Charles and Margaret had two children: Karl and Philip.
Charles (Karl) Adams became a sales representative for a machinery manufacturer in the summer of 1865, which led him to Colorado Territory where he prospected for gold and quartz near Central City. In 1868, he got married. He took a position in his uncle's brokerage house, Adams, Kimball, and Moore, in New York City. By 1880, he was employed as a sales representative for the Hazelton Bosler Company of New York City. This position entailed extensive travel. The family's primary residence appears to have been Stockbridge, Massachusetts, though he worked out of New York City.
