The Durham Kennel Club, Inc., in Durham, N.C., was organized in 1928 by "... owners and lovers of dogs, ... with the one idea of stimulating interest in better dogs." The Club has held dog shows and obedience trials since 1928.
According to the announcement of the first bench show of the Durham Kennel Club, Inc., the Club was organized in 1928 "... to promote the interests of dog fanciers in this territory. The Club, composed of owners and lovers of dogs, has been organized with the one idea of stimulating interest in better dogs." Field trials and bench shows were planned. The first show was to be held at Lakewood Park Skating Rink on 11 October 1928. Officers in 1928 were W. A. Erwin, Jr., president; George B. Whitted, vice-president; and George M. Clark, secretary and treasurer.
The Durham Kennel Club was incorporated in 1931 by L. B. Bryan, J. F. Barfield, George B. Whitted, and E. M. Hunter, Jr., of Durham, N.C. By 1985, the Club's constitution listed its objectives as (a) to further the advancement of all breeds of pure-bred dogs; (b) to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of all breeds of pure-bred dogs and to encourage sportsman-like competition at dog shows and obedience trials; and (c) to conduct sanctioned matches, dog shows, and obedience trials under the rules of the American Kennel Club.
