Robert William Porter, Jr. (b. Apr. 29, 1908, Alma, Neb.-d. Apr. 22, 2000, Charlottesville, Va.), U.S. Army general, graduated from West Point in 1930. During World War II, he served with the 1st Infantry Division in North Africa and Sicily, and II Corps in Italy. After the War, he was a strategic planner in the War Department, and later became Executive Officer to the Under Secretary of the Army. He held a number of positions after 1950, including deputy chief of staff for operations and training, Allied Land Forces, Central Europe; chief of staff, X Corps; and commander, 3rd Armored Division. Beginning in 1964 he commanded the 1st U.S. Army, and his final assignment was as commander-in-chief, Southern Command. General Porter retired in 1969.
