United Order of Oak City (Oak City, Utah)

Oak City is located in Millard County, between the Fishlake National Forest and the Sevier River in Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founded a United Order there on May 3, 1874. The United Order Movement was started by Brigham Young (1801-1877) as a cooperative communal strategy to bring economic and moral reform to Utah. The United Order of Oak City's initial officers were Platte De Alton Lyman (1848-1901), president; Peter Anderson, treasurer; George Finlinson, clerk; John Lovell, farming superintendent; John W. Dutson, assistant; Platte De Alton Lyman and George Finlinson, appraisers. The community initially consisted of approximately 115 Mormons and their rules were adopted from those of the United Order of Saint George, Utah.
