Biographical History
The American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) is the national medical specialty society for physicians in internal medicine. As of 2000, the ACP-ASIM had over 100,000 members. The ACP was founded in 1915 by Heinrich Stern to promote the science of medicine in the United States. In 1956 the ASIM was founded by integrating independent state internal medicine societies into one organization to advocate for internists' Medicare reimbursement issues. In July of 1998 the two societies merged to establish the ACP-ASIM, which continues as a membership organization governed by a Board of Regents and Board of Governors, and provides education and advocacy for physicians and patients.
