Biographical History

Seigneur, deputy attorney general, councillor, lieutenant general for the provost and admiralty courts of Québec, militia officer, and agent general of the Compagnie de la Colonie.

Chartier probably came to Québec with Jean de Lauson in Oct. of 1651, and after studying at the Jesuit college in Québec, accompanied Rémy de Courcelle on several expeditions into Mohawk country. He became attorney general in Jan. 1670, and in 1677, succeeded his father as a judge in the provost court. Between 1666 and 1690, holding various positions in the militia, he continued to assist in the defense of the colony. Finally, in 1703 Louis XIV appointed him chief councillor of the Conseil Supérieur, granting him the fourth highest position in the colony.
