Biographical History

Cristóbal P. Aldrete was born in Del Rio, Texas in 1924. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he studied local government and where he was a founding member of the Alba Club. Aldrete went on to earn a law degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston. In 1954 he served as an attorney on behalf of the GI Forum in the landmark case of Hernandez v. State of Texas. Aldrete practiced law and served in the local government in Del Rio before leaving to accept a position with the Office of Economic Opportunity. He went to work for the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, to act as the executive director of the Viva Humphrey campaign, to be an assistant to both Representative Kazen, Jr. and Senator Bentsen, to serve as the co-chairman of the Southwest Regional Border Commission, and to be the executive director of the Texas Senate Hispanic Caucus. Aldrete passed away in 1991 at the age of 67.
