Biographical History

William Hare Findlay (WHF) was born at Malton in Yorkshire in May 1857. He was educated at Woodhouse Grove and New College, Eastbourne and at Merton College, Oxford. In 1879 he was accepted as a candidate for the Methodist Ministry. Following a year at Richmond College he was appointed to the Madras District of India as an educational missionary. He married Alice Hellier in 1884. He served as Principal of the Negapatam High School for twenty years and founded what was later known as Findlay College, Mannargudi. In 1900 he was appointed one of the Secretaries of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society and attended the World Missionary Conference at Edinburgh in 1910. In 1915 he returned to India where he had been appointed Director of a Survey of Missions for the National Christian Council of India. He died in 1919 before this work was completed.
