Hayne, Theodore Brevard, 1898-1930

Theodore Brevard Hayne was born on August 3, 1898 to Dr. and Mrs. James Adams Hayne in Blackstock, South Carolina. As a child Theodore attended school in Washington D.C., Greenville, South Carolina, and in Panama where his father worked. At the age of twelve Theodore attended The Porter Military College for four years and later attended The Citadel from which he graduated in 1920. After completing college Theodore accepted a job with the United States Public Health Service where he specialized in malarial work. In 1923 Theodore left the United States Public Health Service and became a student at The Medical College of the State of South Carolina. He graduated with a medical degree in 1927 and soon began working with the Rockefeller Foundation in Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa studying the cause and prevention of yellow fever. Hayne returned to South Carolina after eighteen months in West Africa. In January 1930 Theodore married Ann Roselle Hunley. On March 29, 1930 Dr. Hayne returned to Africa to continue his investigations on yellow fever. On July 7, 1930 Theodore fell ill and died on July 11, 1930 in West Africa from the effects of yellow fever.

Theodore Brevard Hayne was born in Congaree, South Carolina on August 3, 1898. His father was James Adam Hayne, South Carolina Health Commissioner. In his adolescence, Hayne began working for the U.S. Public Health Service, assisting in malaria research. After receiving his bachelor's degree from the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, he received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1927. He interned at the U.S. Government Hospital in Ancon, Canal Zone. In June of 1928, Dr. Hayne was hired to work for the Rockefeller Foundation Yellow Fever Commission in West Africa. Dr. Hayne married Roselle Hundley in 1930. After contracting yellow fever, Dr. Hayne died in July of 1930.
