Biographical History

Joel Grover was born on August 5, 1825 in Springfield, Livingston County, New York. He emigrated to Kansas Territory in the second party of the New England Emigrant Aid Company, settling in Lawrence. Grover was an ardent free-state loyalist, serving as Captain of the first free-state military company which was organized at Lawrence. He served in defense of Lawrence in the Wakarusa War of 1855, served in the Kansas House of Representatives in 1867, and held various political offices in Lawrence and Douglas County. Captain Grover died at Lawrence on July 28, 1879.
