Biographical History

Malcolm Eugene Campbell was born January 25th, 1902, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Textiles School at New Bedford Institute of Technology in 1922, and went on to teach textiles engineering at Clemson University, where he received his bachelor's degree. Campbell worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a cotton technologist in cotton spinning and fiber research for 17 years before his appointment as Dean of the School of Textiles at North Carolina State College in 1943. As Dean, Campbell succeeded in improving the educational program, expanding textile research, and increasing enrollment. He also directed the development of the artificial artery, which was used for treatment of an aneurysm Campbell suffered in 1971. During his career Campbell received three honorary doctorate degrees from Clemson University, the Philadelphia Textile Institute, and the National University of Engineering, Peru. He retired from North Carolina State College in 1967, and died in 1978.
