Biographical History
Elsa Garcia was born Elsa Gutiérrez in Monterey, Mexico in the late 1950s. Her family immigrated to the United States around 1965 and settled in the Magnolia Park neighborhood of Houston, Texas. She graduated from Milby High School in 1972 and married Victor García the same year. She attended the University of Houston and worked as an accountant in banking before she left to work as a disk jockey. She hosted her own talk show in the Houston market for KYST radio out of Rosenberg, Texas, and then for Houston-based KLAT. Her husband formed their band early in their marriage, which later became Elsa Garcia and Company, and finally the Elsa Garcia Band, gaining national success in the 1990s. With her band, she recorded for PolyGram Records, Capitol Records, and EMI Records Latin label. Her album, 'Simplemente, ' was nominated for a Grammy album of the year award in 1991 and five of her the twelve albums attained 'gold' status. At the time of the interview, she was a permanent resident of the United States and studying for her citizenship examination. By 2009, she had already retired as an entertainer and had become a realtor serving the Houston area.
