Biographical History
Benjamin Wiley Chidlaw (1900-1977) was born in Cleves, Ohio. He received his commission in the Air Service from West Point in 1922. He advanced to the rank of brigadier general in November 1942 and to major general in April 1945. During World War II, he commanded the 22nd Tactical Air Command in 1944 and 1945 then commanded the Mediterranean Allied Tactical Forces in 1945. After World War II, he commanded the Air Research and Development Command from 1951 until his retirement in May 1955. He is credited with development of the first jet engine and first jet aircraft.
