Biographical History
The Society was originally called the Medical Association of the New York Dispensary, founded in 1836. It lasted about a year and was disbanded and recreated as the present Society, allowing its members to belong not only to the Dispensary but also to other New York hospitals and medical schools. The NYMSS is not to be confused with the Manhattan Medical and Surgical Society. This Society tends to have a more locally-oriented membership than, for instance, the Charaka Club. [The Society does not include female members and does not intend to at the moment.]
