U. S. naval officer; hero of the Battle of Lake Erie, 1813.
Born in South Kingston, R.I., Aug. 23, 1785; famous for his battle on Lake Erie, with his dispatch to General Harrison, "We have met the enemy & they are ours", Sep. 10, 1813; U.S.Congress voted thanks, a medal & rank of Captain, died on the Isl. of Trinidad, Aug. 23, 1819; a granite obelisk is erected to his memory by state of Rhode Island. Perry was born in South Kingston, RI and joined the navy at age fourteen. He won fame when he defeated the British at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
