Biographical History

William Wolf, critic, author, and lecturer, has written extensively on film and theater.

He was for many years film critic and film editor for Cue Magazine (1964-1980), and when Cue was merged into New York Magazine, he bacame a critic and contributing editor writing the On Film column (1980-1983). He subsequently became the syndicated film critic and columnist for the Gannett newspaper chain (1984-1988). Mr. Wolf's articles have appeared in newspapers throughout the United States, publications abroad, and various national and international magazines and pretigious annuals.

In 1988 he began publishing the William Wolf Entertainment Guide on the Internet (www.wolfentertainmentguide.com) containing his reviews of theater, film and other cultural events.

During the course of his career, Wolf has interviewed hundreds of film and theater notables and has covered the wold's major film festivals. He served two years as Chairman of the New York Film Critic's Circle and is a member of the Drama Desk, P.E.N., and the American Association of University Professors.

At New York University, with which he has been affiliated since the early 1970's, he teaches Film as Literature in the English Department, and Cinema and Literature in the French Department. Professor Wolf is particularly know for his Filmmakers course for New York University's School of Continuing Education and its successor course, William Wolf's Movie Previews at the Walter Reade Theater of Lincoln Center.

Mr. Wolf is the author of Landmark Films: the cinema and our century, which he wrote in collaboration with his wife, Lillian Kramer Wolf, and of The Marx Brothers.

A native of Bound Brook, New Jersey, Mr. Wolf is a graduate of Rutgers University, where he majored in journalism. He started his career as a correspondent for various newspapers while at Rutgers, and after graduation, worked for the Associated Press in Huntington, W. VA., before going to Europe to free-lance as a foreign correspondent.
