Biographical History

Opal Miller, former Iowa state legislator, was born in 1915 in Rockwell City, Iowa. In 1972, Miller's husband "Hap" Miller was elected to represent District 47 in the Iowa House of Representatives. In April 1974, "Hap" Miller died suddenly, and Opal Miller was elected to fill the seat made vacant by her husband's death. After running and winning again, Opal Miller served her last two years in the Iowa Legislature.

After the death of her second husband, Charles Sergeant, in 1979, Opal Miller began volunteer work through the Presbyterian Churchs's Volunteers in Mission program. Miller worked as a volunteer secretary at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska; at a hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal; with the Heifer Project International in Massachusetts; and at the Menaul School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After four years at the Menaul School Miller moved to Des Moines, Iowa.
