University of Chicago. Student Government

The University of Chicago's Student Government advocates for student issues in cooperation with the governing bodies of university faculty and administration. As outlined in its Constitution, the goals of Student Government are "To further the interests and promote the welfare of the students at the University of Chicago; to foster a University community; to represent the body more effectively before University authorities and the community at large." Student Government also oversees the funding of registered student organizations. During the mid- to late-twentieth century, Student Government was active in campus programs such as foreign student exchanges, orientation events and speakers' series. Student Government also advocated for academic freedom and other civil liberties issues of concern to students. In the 1960s and 1970s, Student Government was a source of support for students protesting the Vietnam War, working in the civil rights movement, and serving the Hyde Park, Kenwood and Woodlawn communities.
