Biographical History
American author and historian who did research on Native Americans in the American West. Reagan was a professor of anthropology at Brigham Young University.
American author and historian who did research on Native Americans in the American West.
Albert B. Reagan was born in Iowa in 1871. He began his service with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1899. Between 1905 and 1909 he served as a field officer at the Quileute Indian Reservation in Washington State. During his service he completed a Master's Degree from the University of Indiana. His studies gave him an interest in local mythology and legends of the Native Peoples. He collected a number of stories drawn from oral literature of the Quileute and Hoh people. Members of the Hobucket family at LaPush, WA assisted Reagan in his project. In 1934 he retired from service with the Bureau. After retirement he completed his Ph.D. from Stanford University and became an associate professor at Brigham Young University. He became involved with writing and speaking about Native Americans and their history and lore. Several of his writings including the Traditions of the West Coast Indians have come under some criticism from the scholarly community. Although he passed away in 1936, his works continue to be consulted and scrutinized.
