Biographical History

Philip Hershkovitz (1909-1997) was a mammalogist born on October 7, 1909, in Pittsburgh. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Michigan. He worked for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago for 50 years. Much of his career and field work focused on South America, including northern Columbia where he went between 1941 and 1943. He was a recipient of the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship. His collecting efforts are documented in the National Museum of Natural History, Division of Mammals. He retired in 1974, but continued to do fieldwork. He died on February 15, 1997.
