Biographical History
C. W. J. Johnson arrived in California during the Gold Rush. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business. In 1881, he settled in Monterey, becoming the Hotel del Monte's first official photographer, and operated a gallery on Alvarado Street.
Johnson was the Hotel Del Monte's first official photographer, from the mid1880s to the late 1890s. He left an extensive record of the life in the Monterey Bay region.
