Biographical History

Leon Maxwell Gellert, 1892-1977, served with the 10th Battalion A.I.F. which participated at the landing of Gallipoli during World War I. His collection of poems, Songs of a Campaign, 1917, was based on his experiences there. His other publications include The Isle of San, 1919, These Beastly Australians, 1929, Week after Week, 1953 and Year after Year, 1956. He was co-editor of The Home and joined the staff of the Sydney Morning Herald in 1942 as literary editor and feature writer. From 1961 until 1969 he worked for the Daily Telegraph.

Leon Gellert, a South Australian teacher, was wounded in action in 1915, returned to Australia and wrote war poems, which were published in 1917 as "Songs of a Campaign". An enlarged third edition was illustrated by Norman Lindsay.
