Biographical History

Suffragist; Birth control advocate; Author; Journalist.

Annie Webb was born in Manchester, England, 1861; was trained as a teacher at boarding school; moved to U.S. in early 1880s and took a teaching job at Miss Sarah Porter's School (Farmington, CT). Married Edward Porritt, political historian and journalist, 1891; they had four children. She published articles, pamphlets, and books including Causes of the Revolt of the Women in England (1912); The Militant Suffrage Movement in England (1912); The Political Duties of Mothers (1912); Votes and Babies (1912); was co-author (with her husband) of The Unreformed House of Commons (1903); and contibuted articles to Outlook, Independent, American Historical Reviews, Political Science Quarterly, Forum, and many English journals. Porritt was also Secretary of the Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association, 1910-13; spoke frequently on women's suffrage; chaired editorial board of, and contributed articles to, the Birth Control Review; was Secretary of the American Birth Control League in the early 1920s to 1932; and was founder of the Connecticut League for Birth Control. She died in a car accident, 1932.
