Biographical History

Julius Mosher Nolte, A.B. Yale University (1917), LL.B. University of Minnesota (1937). Director of the Center for Continuing Education (1937-1943) and Director and Dean of the General Extension Division (1943-1963) at the University of Minnesota. Expert in the field of adult continuing education.

Julius M. Nolte was born in Duluth, Minnesota on August 21, 1894. He earned his A.B. in 1917 from Yale University and his LL.B. in 1937 from the University of Minnesota. Nolte was an instructor at the University of Minnesota's Duluth campus extension division from 1922-1934, in the subjects of English literature, history, government and Shakespeare. In 1934, Nolte came to Minneapolis to work for the Municipal Reference Bureau (1934-1937); he also taught extension classes on a part-time basis for the University. In 1937 he was hired by the University as the director of the Center of Continuing Education and in 1943 was appointed as director of the general extension division. He served in this capacity until 1946, when he was named dean of the extension division. From 1947-1949, Nolte served as director of the Minnesota Territorial Centennial. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Fork Arts Foundation of America, the League of Minnesota Municipalities, United States National Commission for UNESCO, Armed Forces Education Program Committee of the U.S. Department of Defense, National University Extension Association, Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults, and consulted with many universities on continuing education initiatives.

Julius Nolte retired from the University of Minnesota in 1963 as dean emeritus, and died on January 15, 1965. On November 14, 1965, the Center for Continuing Study at the University of Minnesota was renamed the Nolte Center for Continuing Education in recognition of Nolte's contributions to the field.
