Biographical History
The Greater Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross was chartered 7 July 1916. Until 1941 when it moved into the Clement Mansion at 786 Delaware Ave., the Chapter did not have a permanent headquarters in Buffalo. During World War II, a military blood program was established at the Buffalo Chapter. In 1950, this became a civilian blood program with offices in the Clement building. In 1979, a new blood center building joined the Clement, Littell, and Spaulding buildings in housing the administrative, financial, personnel, public relations, volunteer, emergency, service to military families, health & safety, and blood services of the Chapter. In the past, the Chapter oversaw several branches, but now only the Tonawandas and Olean branches are full-service branches; the others are only blood collection sites.
