Biographical History
In 1817, the Monongahela Navigation Company was incorporated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to "make a lock navigation on the river Monongahela." After overcoming numerous financial and engineering difficulties, the company succeeded in building four locks and dams by 1844, opening the Monongahela from Pittsburgh to Brownsville for slackwater navigation.
The Monongahela Navigation Company was formed to improved navigation for steamboats from the Pennsylvania-Virginia state line to Clarksburg, a distance of approximately 100 miles. A series of dams and locks was constructed on the Monongahela and its tributaries, to take advantage of the slackwater from the Pennsylvania line up to the mouth of Elk Creek in Harrison County.
