Lit., Cambridge Univ.; Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and member of the Royal Commonwealth Society; contributor to British Museum quarterly, Geographical journal, and Mariner's mirror; published books include Decorative printed maps of the 15th to 18th centuries (c1952), Explorers' maps : chapters in the cartographic record of geographical discovery (1958), and The European image and mapping of America, A.D. 1000-1600 (1964); he died in 1970.
