Epithet: Dr; of Sloane MS 1326

British Library Archives and Manuscripts Catalogue : Person : Description : ark:/81055/vdc_100000001192.0x0003b5

Herbert Marshall was a monoglot Englishman who came to work at the Aluminium Works (Laboratory Department) at Dolgarrog, Caernarfonshire. He learnt Welsh and could speak it exceptionally well. Later, he emigrated to Canada.

He studied the mid-Conwy Valley extensively, consulting manuscripts and examining the traditions of the countryside. His intelligent curiosity and powers of collation are very evident in the notes he made on the area.

From the guide to the Herbert Marshall Manuscripts, 1920s, (Bangor University)
