Biographical History

John Fitch was born in 1749 in Connecticut. He was an early experimenter with steam engines and steambnoats, he is believed to have designed the first practical steamboat. Nevertheless, he failed to receive either the opportunity to commercialize his invention or the recognition he justly deserved.

From the description of John Fitch and steam navigation on western waters / by C. Seymor Bullock 1921. (Historical Society of W Pennsylvania). WorldCat record id: 44040547
