Biographical History

The Presbytery of Lexington was erected in 1786 by the Synod of New York and Philadelphia out of the Presbytery of Hanover. It continued in the PCUSA after 1789. It withdrew to the PCCSA in 1861 and continued in the PCUS after 1865; dissolved, 1974.

Erected in Virginia in 1786 by the Synod of New York and Philadelphia (1758-1788) from a portion of the Presbytery of Hanover; continued in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. under the Synod of Virginia after 1788; withdrew to the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America in 1861 and continued in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. after 1865; in 1912 part merged with Presbytery of Winchester to set off the Presbytery of Tygart's Valley; dissolved 1974.

The Presbytery of Lexington was organized in 1786 by the Synod of Virginia of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; it adhered to the Old School during the Schism, and withdrew in 1861 to the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America, which became the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. after the Civil War. Presbytery of Lexington became part of the newly formed Presbytery of Shenandoah in 1974.
