Biographical History
Warren L. Smith was born in Watertown, New York, on March 23, 1914. He enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1940, but his studies were interrupted by service in the U.S. Army during World War II. He resumed his education at the University in 1946, receiving his B.A. in 1947, M.A. in 1949, and Ph.D. in economics in 1952. He taught for a time at the University of Virginia (1953-1956) and Ohio State University (1956-1957) before returning to the University of Michigan as an associate professor of economics. He was made full professor in 1959, and from 1963 to 1969, he served as chairman of the economics department. Smith was a prolific writer and conference speaker. In addition, he was an economics consultant to such government bodies as the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress (1959-1960), the Commission on Money and Credit (1960-1961), the Anti-Trust Division of the Justice Department (1961-1963), and the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Perhaps of greatest importance, Smith was a consultant to the President's Council of Economic Advisers (1961-1967), and served as a member of the Council from 1968 to 1969. Warren L. Smith died unexpectedly of a stroke on April 23, 1972.
Professor of economics at University of Michigan, member of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, 1968-1969.
