Biographical History

Richard Cyril Byrne Haking (Sir) (b. Jan. 24, 1862, Halifax-d. June 9, 1945), General in the British Army, was commissioned in 1881. At the outbreak of World War I, he was given command of the 5th Brigade, was wounded, and then became commander of the 1st Division and, later, XI Corps. He had a reputation as a poor military tactician, engaging in battles that resulted in significant casualties. After the War, General Haking served as chief of the British section of the Armistice Commission and as General Officer Commanding British Troops in Egypt. He retired in 1927.
