Biographical History
The Wampler family has been one of the most influential families in the Rockingham County, Va. area. John Wampler and family, members of the German Baptist Brethren, now Church of the Brethren, moved from Pennsylvania to the Timberville area of the county about 1811. In 1871, John Wampler III purchased a farm in Dayton, known as Sunny Slope. His son, Charles W., began various agricultural experiments, particularly in poultry raising, becoming one of the earliest farmers to hatch eggs in incubators. He served as the first Rockingham County Extension Agent and in 1927 with two brothers, founded the Wampler Feed and Seed Company. His son Charles Jr., born in 1915, continued and furthered the family's business ventures and community endeavors, including serving in the Va. House of Delegates from 1954-1966. [from Finding Aid]
Charles E. Wampler was a corporate executive with several telephone companies, including American Telephone and Telegraph Company, where he was vice-president and secretary from 1963 to 1969. He opened an economic consulting practice, Charles Wampler and Associates, in 1969. Wampler served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was an adviser and consultant to various government agencies including the Office of Emergency Preparedness and its successor, the Federal Preparedness Agency. He served on the boards of directors of several corporations, including Cutler-Hammer, Inc., which owned Macrodata Corp.; Sun Chemical Corp., which owned Standard Kollsman Industries; and Home Life Equity Fund, Inc. Wampler was a member of the Draper Fund's Population Crisis Committee.
