Biographical History
Founded in 1866, in Decatur, Ill.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of Civil War Union military veterans, formed in Decatur, Illinois in 1866. The GAR became one of the first advocacy groups in American politics, lobbying for black veterans, pensions, and supporting Republican candidates. The GAR waned during the 1870s as the Republican Party's commitment to Southern reform decreased, but revived after a change of leadership and reached its peak membership in about 1890. The GAR dissolved in 1956 after the death of its last member, and was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. A wives' auxiliary organization also existed, from which some items in this collection originated.
