Biographical History
The Montgomery True Blues were chartered by the Ala. Legislature on 1836 Feb. 20 in response to the Creek Indian War. They were not outfitted in time to serve in that war, but they did see action in the Florida Seminole War of 1837. The True Blues volunteered their services in Mobile for the Mexican War, but were not accepted because of a surplus of Federal troops available.
The True Blues continued to grow and were composed of many of Montgomery's leading citizens and businessmen. The company was the only one of its kind in Montgomery for many years.
The company volunteered its services to the governor of Ala. when the state seceded from the Union in 1861. It participated in the capture of Fort Barancas and Pensacola Bay, Fla. The company eventually formed a part of the Third Alabama in the Confederate Army and served most of its time in Va.
The True Blues were reorganized in 1874 as the Governor's Guard and again were reorganized in 1883 as the Montgomery True Blues. The True Blues continued to participate in drill and rifle competitions as an organized company.
The True Blues served in Ariz. during the Mexican Border Crisis of 1917 and in various other parts of the country during World War I. The company was eventually split into several separate units for the remainder of the war. The True Blues continued to function as an organized military company until the late 1930s. Two support groups were established under the True Blues: The Montgomery True Blues Reserve Corps and the Montgomery True Blues Survivors Association.
