Biographical History
S. J. Ray (1891-1970) was born Silvey Jackson Ray near Marceline, Missouri. From 1913 to 1915, Ray worked as an illustrator and advertisement artist at the Kansas City Journal and from 1915 to 1931 as an illustrator and advertisement artist at the Kansas City Star. He joined the U. S. Army ca. 1917. From 1919 to 1920, Ray was a student of F. R. Gruger at the Art Students League of New York. In 1921, he married Claird Mary Sohns. From 1931 to 1963, Ray served as an editorial cartoonist at the Kansas City Star. In 1942, he was the recipient of citation from the U. S. Treasury Department for distinguished services rendered in behalf of the National War Savings Program, and in 1951 received a medal from Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for outstanding achievement in bringing about a better understanding of the American way of life.
