Biographical History
Harold Burton Clifford was born in Winthrop, Maine in 1893 and received his B.A. and M.A. from Bates College. He was principal of Alfred High School from 1912-13 and 1916-17 and superintendent of schools, including those in the Boothbay area, from 1917 to 1956. The community playground in Boothbay is named for Clifford, as is the Boothbay Region High School's annual book award. Clifford wrote history books for adults and children about Maine and New England. He died in 1987.
Capt. Charles M. York was born on Bailey Island in Maine in 1887 and died in 1962. He went to work on his father's fishing boat at the age of 14 and fished the Georges and Grand Banks. He was a lifelong fisherman and the subject of a book by Harold Burton Clifford. In 1959 he appeared on the Art Linkletter television program People Are Funny.
