Biographical History

A prominent Virginia family with property in Albermarle, Hanover, and Spotsylvania Counties. Rev. James Maury was a rector at Fredericksville parish and taught school there. His son James Maury was the first American consul to Liverpool. Other prominent family members included Matthew Fontaine Maury, naval officer and oceanographer; Dabney Herndon Maury, Mexican War veteran, Confederate officer, American consul in Columbia, and founder of the Southern Historical Society, Richard Lancelot Maury, Colonel of the 24th Virginia Regiment, and William A. Maury, Assistant Attorney General under several presidents.
