Biographical History

James Edgar Pew, a Philadelphia oil industrialist whose grandson was afflicted with retrolental fibroplasia (blindness found in premature infants), made a generous contribution to establish the Foundation for Vision, Inc. in 1946. The purpose of the organization was to facilitate research to prevent and cure blindness. The Foundation focused its early efforts on retrolental fibroplasia, and by 1956 the cause of the affliction was determined to be the high concentrations of oxygen given to premature infants. The Foundation was dissolved on 8 August 1963.
